MACSIM
MACSIM is an R&D project supported by the french research agency “Agence Nationale de la Recherche” (ANR).
MACSIM aims at bringing in the CIVA platform a new module for the simulation of the Acoustic Emission (AE) testing.
Used for the control of numerous parts such as pressure equipments, nuclear submarine boilers, or large aircrafts structures, this project should allow to push forward the development of a new simulation tool, unique in the world for this NDT method.
The MACSIM consortium is composed of the following partners:

The project will last 3 years (2009-2011) and represents a total investment of 1290k€. The project is supported by the ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche) for an amount of 583,2k€.
Motivations for this project:
The simulation of an NDE technique can bring an important added value for users: Costs reduction & optimisation of performances when designing testing methods or during their qualification process (performance demonstration), help during the analysis of inspection results and a better understanding of physical phenomena, etc.
Moreover, for the acoustic emission technique, the signals obtained are quite complex and subject to large uncertainties, which makes difficult a full analysis and limits the application field of this method.

A deeper analysis of these signals, based on such a simulation tool could allow to better understand them and would bring new sources of physical interpretations.
By helping to set up new post-processing methods, the simulation could make the acoustic emission technique more quantitative and could extend its possibilities to defects characterisation (nature, dimensions).
