The MACSIM project consortium

CEA LIST :
CEA

In the field of NDT, the CEA LIST is one of the major research laboratory, at an international level, and modeling and simulation are part of their main research topic. The CEA LIST develops the CIVA simulation platform, global leader in this application.
CIVA is a multi-technique software including dedicated interfaces and numerous advanced tools.

The CEA LIST, is in charged of the coordination of the project, and participates technically in the developments of models for the waves propagation in the structure, and also on models for the reception of the signals. Finally, the CEA is also in charge of the software developement allowing the integration of the models in the CIVA platform. During these works, the CEA will benefit from its expertise in the ultrasounds field, and particularly from the experience associated to guided waves for which some developments have been already performed and that will be partially re-used in this project. Regarding the software integration, the project will rely on the CIVA platform environment which provides the tools allowing develop a software really usable for the simulation of NDT/AE in industrial configurations.

CETIM :
Cetim

The CETIM, within its department “Engineering, Control, Measurement” has been a pionnieer in France to apply industrially the technique of acoustic emission. Among numerous realizations, several major projects can be quoted: The control of the primary circuit watertightness in french nuclear power plants, the monitoring of transmission devices of the QUEEN MARY II, the detection of breaks during metal sheet pressing, the wear and tear control during machining, the point welding control, the corrosion supervision of buried tanks. For a long time, it has been participating to european standardisation works. This is the only center recognized by the COFREND (French society for NDT) to train and certify acoustic emission operators. Nowadays, the team includes about 10 people specialized in this technique among 4 benefits from a level 3 certification. It also has important and innovative control systems, a test bench unique in Europe to calibrate and qualify the testing equipment, and an inspection pit for the control of pressure devices.

For the success of the MACSIM project, the CETIM will propose its know-how as well as its technical means in order to guide the developments and to validate them on industrial applications.

DCNS :
DCNS

DCNS is the french specialist of naval defense systems, moreover, le maintaining in operational conditions (MCO) represents one of its main axis of developement which results as constant research in order to adapt NDT solutions, in conformity with the requirements of the french navy.

The department for materials expertise of DCNS,the CESMAN, has been using industrially from 1970, the Acoustic Emission technique in order to complete Hydraulic tests of capacities, before commissioning or in service. The capacities or the main elements of the embedded nuclears vessels in submarines. This applications are complemented by specific studies on corrosion or cracking, mainly in metallic structures. The laboratory benefits from an important industrial feedback in this domain. Finally, the CESMAN has been using CIVA for several years, mainly for ultrasounds simulation. It is then really motivated to use such a tool for AE in order to replace long and costly tests on real mock-ups.

DCNS will work in this project as an industrial end user: it brings its experience for the definition of the interfaces and the tools that will be provided to the users. It will step in the ^hase of models validation by doing some experimental measurements and providing results from existing applications.

EADS – Innovation Works :
EADS

EADS Innovation Works is the R&T lab of the EADS group. It ensures the activities allowing to verify the integrity of the structures designed and procuded by the other divisions of the group. About 15 people in France, are in charge of the developments and the technological transfers in this domain.
EADS Innovation Works has been a CIVA user for more than 10 years, and also participates to the developments initiated by the CEA LIST on the different techniques available: Ultrasonic Testing , Eddy current Testing and Radiographic Testing. The goal is to ensure a good synergy and to take into account the specificities linked to aerospace domain.
This is in this framework that EADS participates to the MACSIM project in order to bring its know-how for aerospace applications associated to its expertise in AE/NDT capitalized over the last 20 years. EADS Innovation Works will bring application cases and will participate to the technical specifications as wells the experimental validations of the simulator.

UTC Compiègne – Laboratoire Roberval :
UTC Roberval

The Roberval laboratory is a joint unit of research of UTC/CNRS (UMR 6253) where the research topic are defined around the sustainability of structures, vibro-acoustics and the control of innovative materials.

In the framework of this project, the Roberval laboratory develops some renown researchworks in the field of numerical modeling in mechanics and vibro-acoustics, and particularly, the waves propagation and the defects evolutions in materials structures. The non destructive testing techniques like UT or Acoustic Emission are studied and used in various situations (detection of a flaw in heterogeneous materials, welds,etc.). The laboratory has the required knowledge in order to conduct research works in this project in the modelling of the propagation of cracks, source of acoustic emission, and in the validation of the models with numerical approach and real experiments.
