Lindsey Lindamood

Edison Welding Institute

19th March 2026

Today, we have the great joy of having Lindsey Lindamood joining us for this interview about her activities at the Edison Welding Institute and the use of simulation in NDE and CIVA software there.

Could you describe the activity of the Edison Welding Institute and how it relates to NDT?

EWI focuses on advanced manufacturing technologies, which includes materials joining and ancillary technologies such as destructive and nondestructive testing. We develop or expand applications for existing technologies, transition new technologies from R&D to commercial use, and perform internal R&D for the development of new technology to fill gaps in industry. NDT at EWI may be a standalone project to address specific NDT concerns from a client, but often it is included in a program led by one of our welding teams as a necessary component to verify joint quality.

Could you describe your own role at EWI?

I am an applications engineer at EWI and it is my job to identify potential solutions for inspection challenges, develop procedures, and apply commercial or custom solutions and technologies to these challenges.

For which kind of projects have you and your colleagues used CIVA over the past few years? How has using CIVA affected or helped your projects?

I use CIVA UT for all new inspections with non-standard geometries, especially with PAUT involved. This saves me trial and error, as well as determining which ultrasonic equipment will be best suited for the inspection. I have also used CIVA to develop custom probes for specific geometries or materials like additive manufacturing. CIVA UT Analysis I frequently use, importing files from various ultrasonic equipment, giving me more options to clean up or focus on areas of interest in the data. Including CIVA in project scope allows me to share images of ultrasonic inspection with clients to help them understand the technology better and provides a pre-screening of certain applications to determine if using ultrasound is feasible.

Could you describe the main advantages of CIVA for your NDT simulation needs?

Using CIVA saves me time in the lab with setup, trial and error of various probes and PAUT configurations. It also allows me to multitask or have better use of my time by running simulations and subsequently testing them out in real time with inspection equipment.

Have you already used the new FEM module available in CIVA UT 2025? For which applications have you or do you intend to use this module, complementary to the “conventional” models available in CIVA UT? If you have already used it, how well did it meet your needs, and do you have some feedback to share with us?

I have attempted to use it but have not focused on this yet, so my understanding of its function is not so good.

You attended our “Reliability in NDE” training class two years ago. Could you share your own experience from this course dealing with POD and qualification methodologies?

Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to use the software for POD. I had anticipated a large project at the time that would require this knowledge, but it was not awarded.
