Today, we are joined by Joseph Moysan, lecturer-researcher at the IUT of Aix-Marseille (France), as he discusses his use of the tools distributed by EXTENDE for education and training in NDE/NDT.

Could you describe your role as a lecturer-researcher at the IUT of Aix-Marseille and give us an overview of your research activities, particularly those related to NDE/NDT?
As in every university, the roles of teaching and research staff lead to regular changes in supervisory responsibilities, both in research and teaching. Currently, I am specifically responsible for professional bachelor and master level aeronautical engineering programs within the Mechanical Engineering and Production department. I am also responsible for teaching NDT in these programs and contribute to this teaching in other programs as well. On the research side, I am part of the Waves and Imaging team at the LMA (UMR CNRS 7031), where the NDT team is substantial and studies all types of materials.
Could you tell us what type of research project you used the CIVA simulation tool for? What were the benefits?
For my part, I used a version adapted for liquid-sodium as a coupling liquid to evaluate flight times and perturbations of the ultrasonic beam in a temperature-heterogeneous liquid. This allowed me to anticipate and prepare experimental results.
Have you also participated in collaborative projects with the CEA that have resulted in the development of new models in CIVA?
I am one of the teacher-researchers who developed a material model for multipass welds in austenitic steel, in collaboration with the CEA and EDF. This model is called MINA (Modelling anIsotropy from Notebook of Arcwelding). Initially developed for stick welding, it is now being developed for TIG welding. The ANR project, MINA 3D, led by Cécile Gueudré from our NDT team, is developing a 3D version. The 2D model for stick welding is now accessible to everyone on the latest versions of CIVA.
You are also a significant user of the training tools offered by EXTENDE, namely CIVA Education and the TraiNDE simulators. Could you tell us how you have implemented these tools in your teaching activities?
University programs are evolving thanks to advisory boards. These programs also rely on research. With these two levers, it has been possible to integrate tools like CIVA Education into the curriculum of a program with an emphasis on simulation (BUT 3 GMP, SNRV track). Simulators, particularly TraiNDE RT, are also used as virtual practical exercises in the professional bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Industry Professions, alongside other more traditional practical exercises. The challenge lies in freeing some time up within the existing programs to incorporate these tools.
Regarding TraiNDE UT and TraiNDE RT, what is your initial feedback? What developments would you primarily expect in the future?
The time spent using these tools remains short. My goal is to build self-learning sequences to allow for more independent use by students.
